Builders Close Out 2012 With 82-73 Win Over Fisher College

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Apprentice School men's basketball team closed out its 2012 portion of their schedule on Thursday with a hard fought 82-73 win over NAIA Division II Fisher College.

A quick start saw the Builders race out to an 8-2 lead behind a pair of 3-pointers from Tevin Andrews, Latrone Demiel and a layup from Lavontae Thomas in the first 1:44.  That lead grew to 25-8 with 10:37 left as Lance Darden hit a layup to put the Builders well ahead.

Fisher made one big run in the first half after a Thomas coast-to-coast layup with 9:23 left kept the margin at 17 points, 30-13.  The Falcons went on a 16-3 run over the next nearly four minutes to trim that deficit to 33-29 on a pair of Ryan McCorkle free throws with 5:24 left.  

Over the next 2:10 the Builders ripped off the next nine points to go back up 42-29 on a Johnnie Ferebee jumper with 3:14 left. 

In the second half, the Builders pushed a seven-point halftime lead to 14 on a Jay Melendez 3-point play with 12:33 left to lead 63-49.  The Falcons made another big push to tie the game at 65-all on a Chris Sadafsaz jumper with 7:39 left.  Apprentice School quickly got the lead back to five points as Duane Douglas hit a jumper and Demiel drained a 3-pointer from the left wing to take a 70-65 lead with 6:16 left.   Down the stretch, the Builders hit enough free throws in the final 2:48 to keep Fisher at bay for the win.

Andrews topped the Builders with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Thomas had 11 points and seven assists.  Melendez was the third in double figures for the Builders with 10 points and eight rebounds.  Apprentice School hit 39.4% from the field (28-of-71) and was 16-of-24 from the foul line (66.7%).  They connected on 10-of-27 from 3-point land (37%) and were out-rebounded 55-48.

Fisher College was headed by Tyler Shular with a game-high 30 points, while McCorkle had 11 points and a team-best 15 rebounds.  The Falcons hit 30.8% from the field (24-of-78) while a perfect 19-of-19 from the foul line.  They were 6-of-25 from 3-point land (24%) and turned the ball over 16 times.

Apprentice School starts 2013 with a stiff challenge hosting NCAA Division III powerhouse Virginia Wesleyan College in a 6:30 pm tip on January 2.
