NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – The Apprentice School men's basketball team used a 29-10 run to close the first half and never trailed in defeating Barber-Scotia College 78-69 on Friday night in the 2013 Martin Luther King Classic.

Barber-Scotia opened the game strong using a 21-4 run over an 8:03 span to lead 24-8 on a Lee Sweeney jumper with 8:18 left.  The Builders methodically worked their way back into the contest cutting the lead to 32-29 on a Terrence Palmer 3-pointer with 2:43 left.

The Sabres answered with a LaKeith Scott layup with 2:30 left pushing the lead to 34-29.  Apprentice School closed the half scoring the last eight points as a pair of Tevin Andrews buckets gave the hosts a 35-34 lead, its first lead since 4-3.  Johnnie Ferebee closed the half with a jumper just inside the 3-point line to lead 37-34 at intermission.

In the second half, Barber-Scotia scored the first points on a Sweeney jumper but that was it as the Builders went on an 18-6 run to lead 55-42 on a Ferebee layup with 14:06 left.  The Sabres cut that in half on a 7-0 run topped by an Aaron Davis 3-pointer with 12:29 left to trail 55-49.  From then, the Builders got the lead back to double figures on an Andrews 3-pointer to lead 60-49 with 11:11 left.

Andrews topped the Builders in scoring with 25 points and a career-best 19 rebounds to lead five in double figures.  Ferebee added 13 points and five assists, Palmer chipped in 11, while Lavontae Thomas had 10 points and Darrell Fenton had 10 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.  Scott was the leading scorer for Barber-Scotia with 17 points, while Davis had 15 and Sweeney chipped in with 14 and nine rebounds.

Apprentice School (11-6) faces Williamson Trade (11-4) on Saturday at 6 pm to conclude day two of the MLK Classic.  Barber-Scotia will face Virginia University-Lynchburg at 4 pm on Saturday.
