Builders Topple Patriots 100-85 To Win Penn State Greater Allegheny Tip-off

ON THE COURT: Tournament MVP Jay Melendez scored 18 of his 25 points in the second half as the Apprentice School pulled away in the final 20 minutes to defeat Southern State CC 100-85 to win the Penn State Greater Allegheny Tip-off on Saturday.

After being tied 47-all at halftime, the Builders opened on a 17-6 run to take a 64-53 lead on a Lance Darden 3-point play with 16:22 left.  After Southern State cut the lead to eight , Darden struck for consecutive 3-pointers in a 25 second span to push the Builders up 70-56 with 14:26 left. 

The Patriots had one last run in them as they cut the lead down to 74-68 on a layup from Devante Winn with 10:06 left.  That was as close as they got as the Builders outscored them 18-7 over the next 6:14 to lead 92-75 on a free throw from Johnnie Ferebee.

BUILDER BITS

  • Joining Melendez on the All-Tournament team was Ferebee and senior Darrell Fenton.  Fenton had 17 points and 10 assists on Saturday, while Fenton added 10 points and six rebounds.
  • The 25 points and game-high 15 rebounds for Melendez are new career-highs.

NEXT UP

The Builders will travel to Murfreesboro, NC next Saturday afternoon as they'll face NCAA Division II Chowan University in a 4 pm tip at the Jesse Helms Center.
