Men's Basketball Snaps 12-Game Losing Streak To Chowan With 97-91 OT Win

IN BRIEF: The Apprentice School men's basketball team scored an impressive win on Saturday afternoon as they snapped a 12-game losing streak to NCAA Division II Chowan University with a 97-91 overtime win at the Jesse Helms Center in Murfreesboro, NC.

A close first half saw the hosts take a 38-36 lead into halftime.  Chowan pushed the lead up to 11 points with 8:06 left on a dunk from Ashante Ross to lead 67-56.  The Builders started their comeback on a Jamal Curry layup with 7:19 left to trail 67-58.  They cut the lead to 77-75 on a Rodney Goodman layup with 55 seconds left.  After a missed 3-pointer, Johnnie Ferebee drove the lane and connected on a layup with 12 seconds left to tie the game 77-all and force overtime.

In the overtime, the Builders erupted and scored the first 13 points as Ferebee hit a jumper with 56 seconds left to lead 90-77.  Down the stretch, the Builders went 7-for-8 from the foul line to ice the win.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • Curry scored 26 points and hauled in 11 rebounds in his first game of the year to lead the Builders.
  • Jay Melendez continued his strong start going for 22 points and seven rebounds as he was 7-for-10 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
  • Joining those two in double figures was Ferebee, who was 13-of-14 from the foul line, with 19 points and Goodman with 10 points.
  • The 34 free throws made tonight by the Builders is the third most in a single-game and is the most since they went 35-of-45 from the line at Johnson & Wales (FLA) on Feb. 3, 2007.
  • The last time the Builders defeated Chowan was Dec. 11, 2001 with a 63-53 win in Murfreesboro, NC.
