Second Half Rally Falls Short As Builders Lose 76-69 To Southern Virginia

ON THE COURT: The Apprentice School nearly pulled an improbable comeback on Wednesday night only to fall short in losing 76-69 to Southern Virginia in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The Builders opened the game on a 9-2 run to take an early advantage on a jumper from Darrell Fenton with 16:40 left.  They held a lead until 7:53 left in the half as Chris Baker hit a 3-pointer to give SVU a 22-21 lead.  Apprentice School tied the game twice, but the Knights scored the final four points of the half to take a 32-28 lead on a Wesley Evans layup with six seconds left in the opening half.

In the second half, the Knights were blistering hot as they were 8-of-8 from the floor and 12-of-12 from the foul line in the first 11:09.  Cody Hosier went 1-for-2 from the line with 8:51 left for the first miss of the second half as the Knights jumped out to a 63-42 lead.  Apprentice School went on a 27-10 run to cut the margin to 73-69 on a Jay Melendez 3-pointer with 29 seconds left.

That was as close as the Builders got as the Knights went 3-for-4 from the foul line in the final 15 seconds to ice the win.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • Apprentice School doomed its chances in the second half going 12-of-48 from the floor (25%) but made things interesting by forcing 17 of Southern Virginia's 23 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.
  • Melendez was the leading scorer on the game with a 26-point, 12-rebound double-double.  Darrell Fenton added 13 points to join him in double figures.
  • Despite a nearly 2-to-1 margin on offensive rebounds (25-13), the Builders were out-rebounded on the game 49-46.

Apprentice School travels to Kissimmee, Florida to participate in the Johnson University-Florida Holiday Classic this weekend.  They'll open on Friday afternoon at 4 pm when they face Trinity College (FL).  On Saturday at 2pm, they'll face the host Johnson University-Florida Suns.
