ON THE COURT: Sophomore Jay Melendez scored 22 points to pace four in double figures for The Apprentice School on Friday afternoon as they rallied to defeat Trinity College (FL) 94-80 in the Johnson University (FL) Holiday Classic.
Trinity jumped out quickly to a 10-0 lead with 17:18 left in the half on an Adrian Ponce jumper. The Builders cracked the scoreboard nine seconds later as Jay Melendez hit a pair of free throws. Apprentice School worked the margin back down on the strength of a 18-5 run over nearly a four minute span to put them up 31-25 on a pair of Cameron Perry free throws.
In the second half, the Tigers cut the lead to seven on four occasions with a David Joachim jumper at the 8:29 mark being the last to bring Trinity to 72-65. From there, the Builders went on an 18-4 run to push the lead to 89-69 on a Tony Walton layup with 4:05 left.
BEHIND THE BOXSCORE
- The Builders opened the game 0-for-5 with two turnovers in the first four minutes before a Johnnie Ferebee jumper was their first field goal of the game with 16:56 left.
- For the game, the Builders were 33-of-60 from the floor (55%) and were 24-of-34 from the foul line (70.6%). Trinity was 30-of-89 from the floor (33.7%) and 14-of-18 from the foul line (77.8%). The Tigers outrebounded the Builders 51-43 with a 30-12 advantage on the offensive glass.
- Johnnie Ferebee was next in scoring with 18 points and six assists, while Perry had a career high with 16 points in 15 minutes of action. Terrence Palmer closed the double figures with 10 points, five assists and four steals.
BLOCK PARTY
- The Builders set a school single-game record with 14 blocked shots on the game. The previous record of 12 was done twice, last time against Berkeley (NY) College on Dec. 1, 2012.
- Walton had a career-high five blocked shots to go with a game-high 10 rebounds. Freshman Willie Bass was next with a season-high four blocked shots.
