Builders Topple Sabres 75-58 To Close MLK Classic

ON THE COURT: Sophomore Jay Melendez scored a career-high 33 points and hauled in 14 rebounds as the Apprentice School knocked off Barber-Scotia College 75-58 in the final men's game of the 2014 Martin Luther King Classic on Sunday.

The Builders got off to another quick start racing out to a 9-1 lead on a Melendez dunk with 16:27 left.   Apprentice School pushed the lead to as much as 21 points in the first half as a Latrone Demiel 3-pointer with 2:39 left gave the hosts a 42-21 lead. 

Barber-Scotia went on an 11-2 run that spanned into the first 2:36 of the second half when a Demetrius Jordan jumper with 17:24 left brought the Sabres to 44-32.  The lead was no less than 11 points the rest of the game.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • Melendez topped his previous career-high of 31 points set a on Jan. 8 against Maine-Fort Kent.  That was his fourth 30-point game of the season and third in the last five games.
  • Tony Walton was next in scoring for the Builders with nine points and Lance Darden followed with eight.
  • On the boards, Terrence Palmer had his second straight game with nine rebounds to follow Melendez on the glass.  Jamal Curry was next with seven and Darrell Fenton added six as the Builders out-rebounded the Sabres 58-47.
  • Barber-Scotia was paced by Carlos Benton with 24 points and Joel Barnes topped the boards with 10 for the Sabers.
