ON THE COURT: Junior Johnnie Ferebee scored a season-high 24 points to lead four in double figures on Saturday night as the Apprentice School held off a late Washington Adventist University rally for an 82-78 win over the Shock in a key U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The Builders held the lead for the majority of the first half and took a 10-point margin on a pair of Cameron Perry free throws with 5:38 left to lead 33-23.  Washington Adventist trimmed that to the halftime margin of 39-36 on a 3-pointer from Anthony Berry with 36 seconds left in the half.

In a second half that saw five ties and 10 lead changes, Ferebee hit a jumper with 7:29 left for a 62-61 Apprentice School lead that they never relinquished.  Apprentice School was 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final 66 seconds to ice the win.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

• The win on Saturday night snapped a seven-game losing skid to the Shock.  Apprentice School last defeated Washington Adventist on Feb. 15, 2010 by a 79-65 margin.
• Ferebee was 10-for-11 from the foul line for his 24 points.  He topped his previous season-high of 21 against West Virginia Tech back at the Barber-Scotia Classic on November 23.
• As a team, the Builders were 25-of-27 from the foul line (92.6%) which is the fourth-best single-game total in the last 30 years.  That was the highest since the Builders were 18-of-19 (94.7%) against Chowan University on Jan. 31, 2007.
• Sophomore Jay Melendez broke the single-season 3-pointers made record as he drained three triples for his 15 points.  The Suffolk native now has 57 3-pointers to topple the record of 56 by Charles Holiday in 2005-06.
• Junior Jamal Curry had his ninth double-double of the year with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.  He and Melendez share the team lead in double-doubles with nine.
• Lance Darden was the fourth double-figure scorer for the Builders with 10 points and four rebounds.
• For the game, the Builders were 25-of-60 from the field (41.7%), 7-of-14 from 3-point range (50%) to go with their stellar 25-of-27 performance from the foul line.  Apprentice School out-rebounded Washington Adventist 46-35.
• The Shock were paced by Anthony Berry with a game-high 25 points. 

NEXT UP

The Builders are off now until February 3 when they have a rematch with NCAA Division II Chowan University at 6 pm in the new Apprentice School gym.  These teams played on November 16 at Chowan and the Builders pulled out a 97-91 overtime win.
