Melendez Named USCAA Men's Division I Player Of The Week

Apprentice School junior guard Jay Melendez was named on Tuesday as the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Division I Player of the Week for the week ending December 7.

Melendez, an outside machinist apprentice from Suffolk, nearly recorded a double-double in Saturday's 90-88 home win over NCAA Division II University of District of Columbia.  He had 20 points, nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and blocked a shot.

The win was the first for the men over a NCAA Division II team in over two years and helped raise their record to 4-4 on the year.

Apprentice School heads to West Palm Beach, Fla. this weekend to participate in a classic hosted by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division II fifth-ranked Northwood University.  They'll face the host Seahawks on Friday night at 7 pm and then take on USCAA member Florida National University on Saturday at 5 pm.
