Men's Basketball Visits NAIA Nationally-Ranked Northwood For Pair Of Weekend Games

The men's basketball team will venture this weekend to West Palm Beach, Florida to participate in the English Family Classic hosted by National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) member Northwood University.  On Friday night, they'll tangle with the host Seahawks at 7 pm and will face United States Collegiate Athletic Association member Florida National University at 5 pm.   This will be the first-ever meetings with both schools.

Northwood enters the game 4-0 and ranked third in the latest NAIA Division II coaches' poll.  The Seahawks, coached by former Villanova University coach and Basketball Hall of Fame member Rollie Massimino, lead NAIA in 3-point shooting  at 56 percent.  Four players average in double figures with Chris Solomon leading at 20 points per game.  Following him are Fred Mattison (16.7), Malte Ziegenhagen (14) and Marcus Hardy (10.3).  Ian Umpierre leads the NAIA in steals at 3.6 per game and is second in assists at 7.66 per contest.

Florida National is 4-4 entering the weekend and are averaging over 80 points per game.  They also have four averaging in double figures with John Hogan leading at 14.4 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game.  Regan O'Rourke followis him at 12.5 points, while Quantavis Hall is hitting 12 points per game and Jarvis Davis is averaging 10.1 per game.  This has the potential for an up-and-down contest as the Conquistadors average over 80 points per game

This is the first of two meetings with the Conquistadors as they'll travel to Newport News for the annual Martin Luther King Classic on January 16, 2015 which is the next home game for the Builders.

The Apprentice School enters the weekend 4-4 after knocking off NCAA Division II University of District of Columbia 90-88.  Junior Jay Melendez scored 20 points and had nine rebounds in the game and was named USCAA Men's Division I Player of the Week this week.  Senior Johnnie Ferebee leads the team in scoring (19.4 ppg) and assists (5.0 apg), while Melendez follows him at 16 points per game.
