Ending Stretch Dooms Builders In Loss To Florida National

IN BRIEF: Jay Melendez scored 14 points to lead three in double figures on Saturday as the Apprentice School lost 75-61 to Florida National in the final game of the Northwood University English Family Classic.

ON THE COURT

  • The Builders held a lead for the majority of the first half as a pair of Jamal Curry free throws at the 17 minute mark gav them a 13-6 advantage.
  • Florida National worked back into the game and tied it on a free throw from Yves Goedschalk with 6:17 left at 28-all.  A 3-pointer from Regan O'Rourke put the Conquistadors on top 29-26 for an advantage they held the rest of the half.
  • Apprentice School opened the second half scoring 11 of the first 13 points to take a 43-39 lead on a 3-pointer from Melendez with 16:56 left.  They increased that advantage to 10 at 57-47 on a Johnnie Ferebee jumper with 9:28 left.
  • From that point, the Conquistadors went on a 16-0 run over the next 4:09 to lead 63-57 on a Goedschalk jumper with 5:17 left.  In fact that run eventually turned into a 28-4 spurt to close the game.

 

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • Melendez was the leading scorer for the Builders with 14 points and four rebounds, while Curry added 13 points and 10 boards.  Joining them in double figures was senior Tony Walton with 11 points and seven boards.
  • Ferebee, who was named to the All-Tournament team, had eight points, eight assists and five rebounds.
  • FNU had all five starters in double figures as Quantavis Hall and John Hogan had 15 points apiece to lead the Conquistadors.

 

ROUND TWO - IN NEWPORT NEWS
These teams will meet again on January 16, 2015 at 8pm in the final game of day one in the 2015 Martin Luther King Classic.  That will be the next home game for the Builders.

NEXT UP - BERKELEY COLLEGE CLASSIC
The Builders now visit the Big Apple for the end of the 2014 portion of their schedule when they'll face Vaughn College in the Berkeley College Classic at noon on December 20.
