IN BRIEF: A 27-5 run over the first seven minutes of the second half lifted The Apprentice School to a 91-68 win over Vaughn College to start the Berkeley College Classic on Saturday in New York City.

ON THE COURT

• In a first half that saw six ties and seven lead changes, Johnnie Ferebee scored six straight points in 106 seconds as the Builders held a 26-25 lead with 2:56 left in the half.
• Vaughn scored nine of the next 11 points over a 1:49 span to take its largest lead of the game at 34-27 on a Maleec Taylor jumper with 1:07 left.  
• A pair of Shaun Johnson free throws with 17 seconds left put the Builders down 34-29 at the half.
• In the second half, the Builders tied the game on a Tony Walton stickback with 17:53 left at 36-all.  A jumper from Ferebee at the 16 minute mark put the Builders up 42-37.
• Following a pair of Rashad Luckett free throws 25 seconds later bringing the Warriors to 42-39, the Builders found a hot hand from behind the arc.  They went 4-of-5 from 3-point land over the next 1:55.  A pair of triples from Jay Melendez and two from Ferebee helped push the lead to 54-39 on a Ferebee 3-ball with 13:40 left. Melendez ended the opening 27-5 run on a layup with 13:02 left to give the Builders a 56-39 lead.  
• Vaughn had one last run in them as they went on 12-4 flurry over the next 2:41 as a free throw from Henry Burch with 10:21 left brought the Warriors to 60-51.
• Apprentice School pushed the lead to 20 points on a 3-pointer from Zach Zastrow with 4:08 left to lead 81-61.  
• The Warriors scored the next five points to get to 81-66 on a Sergio Mejia free throw with 3:18 left, but the Builders ended the game on a 10-2 run highlighted by a pair of free throws each from DeQuan Fofana and DeAndre Demiel to put them up 87-66 with 69 seconds left.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

• After a frigid first half that saw the Builders go 12-for-36 from the floor (33.3%), 1-of-8 from behind the arc (12.5%) and a horrendous 4-of-15 from the foul line (26.7%), the shooting went wild in the second half.  They were 24-of-43 from the floor (55.8%), 6-of-14 from 3-point land (42.9%) and hit ann eight of their free throws.
• Ferebee was the leading scorer in the game with 25 points, while Melendez added 24 and seven rebounds.  Jamal Curry had another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds with a pair of blocked shots.
• Mejia was the leading scorer for Vaughn with 19 points, while Isaid Reed was 5-for-5 from the floor for 10 points.  The Warriors were consistent each half with 34 points and hit 40% in both halves.

The Builders will finish the 2014 portion of their schedule with a 10 am Sunday morning tip against the Knights of Berkeley College.  Both teams are nationally-ranked within the United States Collegiate Athletic Association as the Builders are tenth in Division I, while the Knights are sixth in Division II.
