Melendez Named First Team All-State

Apprentice School junior Jay Melendez was named on Wednesday to the first team Virginia Sports Information Directors Association All-State College Division squad.  The team consisted from all the non-NCAA Division I schools in the state.

Melendez, an outside machinist apprentice from Suffolk, averaged 17.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for the Builders who finished 15-10 on the year.  He had 10 double-doubles including a career-best 19 rebounds against Central Penn College.  He had a seven-game stretch this season averaging over 20 points and 12 rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-4 guard topped the team in 3-pointers made (57) and had a pair of games where he hit six.  At the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships, Melendez won the 3-point contest prior to the tournament.

Melendez is the fifth Builder since 2004 to be named to the first team VaSID All-State squad as Tevin Andrews was the last representative in 2012-13 to earn first team honors.  He was named to the USCAA First Team All-American squad in March.
