Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Apprentice School had 11 players score as they used a huge second-half run to knock off Blue Lights College 94-56 in their season opener.

ON THE COURT:

The Builders shot 38% from the field in the first half and was led by Brandon Joyner's 10 points. The team also had a 24-16 advantage on the boards and forced 11 turnovers as they held an 11-point lead at the break.

Blue Lights College closed the gap to five points trailing 46-41 after a pair of free-throws. The Builders scored the next 17 points and held the Thoroughbreds scoreless for the next six minutes before a lay-up ended the drought. The Builders then went on a 31-13 run to pull away and cruise to their first season opening victory since the 2015-2016 season when they knocked off Columbia International 69-62.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Brandon Joyner led all scorers with 26 points. He was 10-for-19 from the field, including 6-for-12 behind the arc.
  • Drew Walton was 9-for-13 from the floor for 20 points and added nine rebounds.
  • Miles Barrett added 11 points and a game-high seven assists in his Builders debut.
  • Corey Joyner added a game-high seven assists and Marion Moore had a game-high 11 rebounds.
  • The Builders out-rebounded the Thoroughbreds 45-39 and held a 22-10 advantage in second chance opportunities.
  • The Apprentice School forced 20 turnovers and converted 36 points off those opportunities.
  • The team spread the ball around with ten players notching an assist for a total of 27 in the game.

The Builders will be back in action next weekend as they will face Bryant & Stratton-Liverpool and SUNY Delhi in the SUNY Delhi Hall of Fame Classic.
