Builders Defeat Randolph 76-74

LYNCHBURG, Va. Corey Joyner scored a career-high 22 points while Drew Walton posted his fourth straight double-double to lead the Apprentice School men's basketball team to a 76-74 victory over Randolph College.

ON THE COURT:

In a back and forth affair, the Builders shot 41% from the floor in the first half as they held a one-point lead at the break. Corey Joyner led the team with 13 points. The teams continued to battle back and forth with Randolph College taking a 70-69 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the game. A Drew Walton layup and a pair of free-throws by Corey Joyner put the Builders ahead by three. After a free throw by the Wildcats brought them within two, Corey Joyner added a pair of free-throws to push the lead to four. A three-pointer by Sammy Hooper brought the Wildcats within one with under 10 seconds remaining. Brandon Joyner gave the Builders a two-point cushion after sinking one of two free throws and the Builders forced a turnover as time expired to clinch the victory. 

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Corey Joyner had 22 points and was 12-for-13 from the charity stripe.
  • Drew Walton continued his dominance on the glass with 17 rebounds to go along with his 21 points. 
  • Bryant Fuller added 11 points for the Builders.
  • The Builders edged the Wildcats in the paint with a 32-26 advantage.
  • The Apprentice School showed success from the free-throw line sinking 22 out of 26 opportunities. 

UP NEXT:

The Builders will face two teams in the Roger Taylor Invitational Classic hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan this weekend. The team will face the host, NC Wesleyan, on Friday evening at 8 p.m. before facing Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. NC Wesleyan holds a 3-1 record on the season, most recently defeating Guilford in their home opener. Southern Virginia enters the weekend with a 1-4 record and will face Mid-Atlantic Christian on Friday night prior to facing the Builders.
