Builders Drop Home Contest 99-95 to Clinton

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Brandon Joyner tied a school record with nine three-pointers but The Apprentice School squandered a big lead as they fell 99-95 in conference action to Clinton College on Saturday afternoon.

ON THE COURT: Brandon Joyner was the Builders' hot hand in the first half as he made six three-pointers en route to 23 first-half points to lead the Builders offensively in the first stanza. Collectively, the Builders shot 44% from the floor and scored 18 points off turnovers. The Builders held a slim 27-25 lead with 11:30 remaining before mounting a 17-0 run in the next 4:28 of the first half which included a pair of threes from Brandon Joyner and one from Sam Morris. The Bears responded with a 17-2 run to cut the Builders lead to four. A pair of free throws from Brandon Joyner and a three from Sam Morris extended the Builders' lead to nine at the break. The teams traded baskets in the second half before Clinton took the lead with nine minutes remaining. The Bears kept the Builders at bay for the next few minutes before taking their largest lead to 12. The Builders eventually cut the lead to three on a Sam Morris three but a layup and strong free-throw shooting by the Bears clinched the win.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: 

  • Brandon Joyner had a career game with 36 points which included nine three-pointers which tied a school record previously set by Charles Holiday against Florida Gulf Coast on February 10, 2006.
  • Sam Morris added 19 points, which included five three-pointers.
  • The Builders tied the school record with 15 made three-pointers in a game.
  • Drew Walton added a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Corey Joyner dished out 10 assists which marked the second time this season he's reached that plateau.
  • The Builders forced 19 turnovers and scored 28 points off the turnovers.
  • Clinton outscored The Apprentice School 44-30 in the paint.

The Builders return to action on Saturday, January 12th when they host Warren Wilson at 2 p.m. They remain home to play Maine Fort Kent on Sunday afternoon as part of a doubleheader with the women's team.
