NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Apprentice School men's basketball team overcame an early double-digit deficit to rally for a 67-59 victory over Maine-Fort Kent on Sunday afternoon.
ON THE COURT: Cold shooting blues by the Builders in the first half gave Maine-Fort Kent a 15 point lead at the break. The Bengals shot 46% from the floor and was led by Jarid Walton's 20 first-half points. The Builders shot 29% and were outworked in the paint 14-6. Despite the cold shooting woes, the Builders trailed 24-23 with less than eight minutes remaining but did not convert a basket until Corey Joyner's jumper under a minute remaining in the first half. The Builders slowly chipped at the deficit in the second half before taking the lead 55-54 after a Corey Joyner three pointer. After a free-throw and a layup by Walton, Drew Walton converted a layup to tie the game at 57. Three straight layups and a jumper by Brandon Joyner quickly extended the lead to eight as the Builders wore down a short-handed Bengals team for their second straight victory.
BEHIND THE BOX SCORE:
- Four players scored in double-figures for the Builders, who shot 58% from the floor in the second half to wear down the Bengals. Maine-Fort Kent shot 25% from the floor and was held to only 19 points in the second half.
- Despite being in early foul trouble, Drew Walton was still able to post a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
- Corey Joyner fell short of a triple-double with 14 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.
- Marion Moore added 14 points and eight rebounds.
- Brandon Joyner came off the bench and added 10 points.
- The Builders were outrebounded 42-37 and did not have any second chance points.
- Maine-Fort Kent was led by Jarid Walton's 30 points and 10 rebounds.
The Builders wrap up their seven-game homestand with games against Stratford University and Thomas Nelson Community College next weekend as part of the MLK Classic.
