Builders Fall Short 96-90

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - The Apprentice School men's basketball overcame a double-digit deficit in the second half but came up short to conference-leading Johnson & Wales 96-90 on Saturday afternoon.

The Builders converted their first five shots of the game as they jumped out to a 11-7 advantage early in the first quarter. The Wildcats responded with a 14-5 run to take a 21-16 lead with 12 minutes left in the quarter. The teams traded baskets and the Builders pulled within three on a jumper by Avin Hawkins. The Wildcats went on a 10-0 run over three minutes before a pair of free throws by Hawkins snapped the drought for the Builders. The Wildcats kept the Builders at bay as they held a 51-40 advantage at the break. Johnson & Wales converted eight three-pointers in the first half, including six for Robert Hobson, who had 20 points at the break. The Wildcats maintained the pressure in the second half but the Builders battled back and eventually took the lead at 84-83. Down the stretch, the Wildcats converted their shots as they held off the Builders.

ON THE COURT:

  • The Builders had five players in double-figures and were led by Avin Hawkins' 19 points. 
  • Drew Walton notched a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Vershawn Eley had 17 points and Caleb Mielewski added 14 points off the bench.
  • Brandon Joyner contributed 11 points
  • JWU was led by Robert Hobson's 31 points, including seven three-pointers.

The Builders return to action on Sunday as they host Clinton College at 4 p.m. with their Senior Day!
