Apprentice School Men's Basketball Announces All Decade Team

Newport News, VA - The Apprentice School Men's Basketball program has announced its All Decade Team. Current Head Coach Tim Sparks teamed up with previous Head Coach and now Associate Athletic Director Evan Kee, Athletic Director Michael Allen as well as longtime Athletic Trainer Sean Hanrahan and Former Apprentice SID and current Hampton University SID Jim Heath to bring you the Apprentice School Men's Basketball All Decade Team. Players eligible for consideration must have played a minimum of one season from 2009-2010 through the 2018-2019.

 

 Player of the Decade

Isaih Harrison(2008-2012) – One of the most decorated men's basketball players of all time, Harrison left his mark all through the Apprentice School record books. He holds the record for the highest career scoring average, pouring in 19.2 points per game during his 91 game career. He's second all-time in total career points (1748) and is the leader in almost every single rebounding statistic. During his 4 years, he brought down 10.8 rebounds per game (984 total), set the career record for free throws made at 404 and also finished with 208 total assists. Was a Three-time USCAA First Team All-American and 3-time VaSID All State team member. He was also named the Apprentice School Co-Athlete of the Year with Wrestling's Marcus Chevres in 2012.

 All Decade Team Captain

Michael "MJ" Gainey Jr. (2014-2018) – Gainey was a highly regarded recruit from Rocky Mount, NC whose playing career at the Apprentice School was cut short due to injury. Appearing in 36 total games during his first 3 seasons, he made the decision to get a jump-start on his coaching career in what would have been his senior season (2017-2018). Gainey served as a volunteer assistant/player development coach for two seasons while he finished his apprenticeship. Upon completion he joined the coaching staff as a paid assistant and has continued giving back to the basketball program and school.

All Decade First Team

Forward – Isaih Harrison (2008-2012) - The Three-time All-American's career was highlighted with a USCAA National Tournament Appearance during the 2011-2012 season in which he led the Builders to a fourth place finish. During that season he averaged a double-double (20.9 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.

 

Guard – Tevin Andrews (2009-2013) - Three-time USCAA First Team All-American and Two-time member of the VaSID All State Team. Andrews is third in the record books for total points (1647) and has a career scoring average of 16 points per game. Led the Apprentice School to back-to-back USCAA National Tournament appearances in 2011-2012 & 2012-2013. 2013 Apprentice School Athlete of the Year.

 

 

Guard – Jay Melendez (2012-2016) - Two-time USCAA First Team All-American and 2016 Apprentice School Athlete of the Year. As a senior, Melendez led the team in scoring (17.8 PPG), rebounding (9.2 RPG) and three-pointers made (52). Posted a career-high of 34 points his senior year against Williamson College of the Trades. Currently number four on the list for career points as a Builder (1476) and is the leader in 3-point field goals made (206).

 

 

Forward – Drew Walton (2017-2020) - Nicknamed "Mr. 20/20" for his monster stat lines, Walton is a Two-time USCAA First Team All-American. Had his best statistical season in 2018-2019 when he averaged 17.7 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. Finished his three-year career with 1149 total points and 815 total rebounds. His offensive rebounds per game average of 3.84 places him at the top of that statistical record for his career.

 

Guard – Johnnie Ferebee (2011-2015) – Ferebee's four-year career as a Builder was highlighted with wins! He helped lead the Builder to three consecutive USCAA National Tournament appearances and 65 wins. He holds the record for career assists with 464 and finished with 1038 points. His best season came during his senior year (2014-2015), in which he averaged 15.3 points, 5.8 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game. He also shot 79.6% from the free throw line that season.

 

All Decade Second Team

 

Forward – Zach Johnson (2015-2017) – Johnson played two seasons with the Builders after transferring in from Bryant & Stratton (VA). For his two seasons, he averaged 15.8 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. Was a USCAA Second Team All-American during the 2016-2017 season and led the Builders to the USCAA National Tournament during the 2015-2016 season.  

 

 

Guard – Romello Anderson (2017-2018) – Anderson played only one season with the Builders after transferring in from Bryant & Stratton (VA). During his lone season, he was named a USCAA First Team All-American as well as a member of the VaSID All-State Team. He averaged an all-time best 24.5 points per game and broke the single-season scoring record with 588 points in 24 games.

 

 

 Forward – Eric Joe (2007-2010) – Joe scored 1215 points during his 82 games as a Builder. During his senior season (2009-2010), he was named a USCAA Honorable Mention All-American and helped guide the Builders to a 13-12 record. Finished with a career scoring average of 14.8 points per game.

 

 Forward – Marion Moore (2018-Present) – Had a remarkable freshman season in which he was named a USCAA Second Team All-American. Averaged 17.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while shooting 58.5% from the field. During his rooking campaign, posted a career high of 37 points against Southern Virginia University.

  

 

Guard– Corey Joyner (2018-Present) – Another transfer from Bryant & Stratton (VA), Joyner has had an unbelievable career so for. Has been named USCAA All-American Honorable Mention twice. In his first season in a Builder uniform, he averaged 11.5 points, 6.2 assists and 4.3 rebounds per game. Increased his assist and rebounding averages to 6.4 & 5.9 this past season.
