Builders come up short at PSU-Mont Alto, 90-80

Mont Alto, PA – Fresh off the 21-point win over PSU-York, the Apprentice Men's Basketball team had a quick turnaround, as they were back in action Saturday afternoon against PSU-Mont Alto.  Both teams were victorious in their respective games on Friday night, and both looked to come away from the weekend with two wins.  The Nittany Lions presented the Builders with a size advantage, but Apprentice would try to use their speed and depth to counter that advantage.

PSU-Mont Alto jumped out to an early 9-0 lead, before Adrion Wall put the Builders on the board with a 3-point basket.  The Nittany Lions would increase their lead, but Wall drained another 3-pointer to pull within 16-7.  PSU-Mont Alto was able to push their lead to 10 points, but two free throws from Corey Joyner trimmed the lead back to eight, 20-12.  Apprentice proceeded to go on an 8 to 4 run to pull within 4 points, 24-20, as Isiah Jones converted on a fast break layup that was started by a Marion Moore defensive rebound.  However, the Nittany Lions would go on a run of their own to take their largest lead of the game, 33-20.  Both teams traded a number of baskets and as the half came to an end, the Builders found themselves trailing by a score of 40-28.

Avin Hawkins started the second half off with a 3-point FG, followed by a break away dunk to keep Apprentice within ten, 45-35.  However, PSU-Mont Alto jumped back out to a 13-point lead with 16:05 remaining in the game.  A Corey Joyner jump shot trimmed the lead back to 11, but the Nittany Lions would score six straight pints, to take a 56-39 advantage.  An Adrion Wall 3, cut the lead to 56-42, but, once again, PSU-Mont Alto did not allow the Builders to gain any momentum, going up 62-45 with 10:26 left to play.  However, Angel Pacheco-Ortiz would come in the game and drain a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 12 points, and then Corey Joyner cut it to 10 with an outside jumper, making the score 73-63.  On the next possession, Joyner scored again, followed by Tony Epps, Jr. to pull within 6 points.  Apprentice would get as close as 4 points, but in the end the Builders suffered the loss by a final score of 90-80.

Marion Moore led Apprentice with 16 points on the day, to go along with 8 rebounds and 2 steaks.  Corey Joyner finished with 14 points and 7 assists, while Avin Hawkins had 11 points.  Adrion Wall came off the bench and went 3-5 from the 3-point line to finish the game with 9 points.  Apprentice finishes the weekend at 1-1 and moves to 2-2 on the season.  They will return to action next Saturday when they travel to Buena Vista, VA to face Southern Virginia University.  Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
