Buena Vista, VA – As has come accustomed to Apprentice Athletic Teams, Men's Basketball was on the road again this weekend for an early afternoon Saturday game.  This week the Builders would face a USA South opponent Southern Virginia University.  Like Apprentice, the Knights came into the game with a record of 2-2 but were on a two-game losing streak.  While Apprentice was coming off a split up in Pennsylvania against two Penn State schools.  Both teams have similar offensives tyles, as both like to push the ball quickly up the court.  The game would be a story of which team would be able to step up on the defensive side of the ball and minimize the other's scoring opportunities.

As expected, both teams were able to push the ball down the court and trade baskets.  Early in the half, Marion Moore gave the Builders the 7-5, lead but Sothern Virginia tied it up after a layup.  The Knights would take the lead at 9-7, but Vershawn Eley answered with a big 3-pointer to put Apprentice back in front, 10-9.  Unfortunately, the Knights would go on a 10-0 run and at the 13:16 mark of the first half, they found themselves up 20-10.  After some tough defensive stops, the Builders cut the lead to 3 when Jayden Eason converted a fast break layup.  Marion Moore tied the game at 29-29, after two free throws, but Southern Virginia, once again scored 10 straight points and Apprentice would go into the locker room trailing 44-34.

Just 3 minutes into the second half, the Knights took their largest lead of the game, 49-34, but the Builders would turn it on a begin their comeback.  With 14:52 left in the game, Corey Joyner cut the lead to under 10 points, 57-48 and he followed that up with a layup to make it a 57-50.  Three minutes later Karree Smith pulled Apprentice to within 2 points, 57-55 after converting a driving layup.  However, Southern Virginia was able to stop the run and push their lead back up to 10 points, 69-59.  While the Builders would cut into the lead, they were not able to overtake it and as they game came to an end, they would fall to the Knights by a score of 77-66.

Marion Moore led Apprentice with 17 points, while going 5-6 from the free throw line.  Avin Hawkins, Corey Joyner and Jayden Eason combined for 30 points, scoring 10 points each.  Joyner also had 7 rebounds to go along with his 6 assists.  The Builders outrebounded Southern Virginia 37-33, while the bench outscored the Knights 24-4.  Apprentice will return to action Tuesday, as they travel to Apex, NC to face Blue Lights College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
