Michael Gainey Jr. is entering his fifth season as an assistant coach at the Apprentice School.
 
Gainey is a native of Rocky Mount, NC where he was coached by his father Michael Gainey Sr. His team won the 3A state championship during his junior year. Michael helped lead his team to the Regional Championship game during his senior year at Rocky Mount High School, where they lost to the eventual 3A state champions in 2013.
 
As a player at The Apprentice School, Michael was named most improved player as a freshman. He helped lead the team to the USCAA National tournament where they were upset by Rochester College. During that game Michael set a USCAA National Record for “The Most Blocked Shots” in a USCAA tournament game(5).
 
In 2018 Michael became an Graduate of the Apprentice School and also a 4 year letter winner.
 
Michael is a Production Planner for the Newport News Shipyard and is also the Player Development Coach. He has a passion and love for the game of basketball and is always willing to work with any player who has the desire to work to get better each day.
