STATE COLLEGE, PA. – The Apprentice School golf team opened play on Monday at the 2012 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships and carded a 329 round to sit in sixth place out of 19 teams in the championships at Penn State University Blue Course.

Sophomore Kyle Mutter is  leading the Builders after round one sitting in a three-way tie for second place with a three-over-par 75.  Junior Ben Hunter is in a tie for sixth place two strokes back from Mutter with a 77 over the 6,686 yard, par-72 course.

Other Apprentice School scorers on day one included freshman Harrison Baker (87/T53rd) and junior Blake Henger (90/T69) to make the 329 round. 

Daemen College (NY) leads the event with a 304, followed by Penn State Mont Alto (313), 2011 USCAA Champion Lindenwood-Belleville (315), NHTI (319) and 2010 USCAA Champion Rochester College (321) to round out the top five.

Eli Cobti of Daemen College leads the medalist race at two-over-par 74, followed by three at 75, one at 76 and five at 77 to round out the top ten individually.

In the post-round skills contest, sophomore Eric Johnston won the pitching contest in a playoff after scoring 24 points in his round.

The final round of the 2012 USCAA Nationals will take place Tuesday morning with a 9 am shotgun start.
