The Apprentice School shot a 318 in the first round of the Glenn Heath Shipbuilders Memorial Tournament held at Williamsburg Club on Monday. Junior Ben Hunter shot a two-under-par 69 to lead the event by three strokes.
ON THE COURSE
- Junior Ben Hunter etched another mark into the record books becoming the first Apprentice School golfer to fire a pair of rounds in the 60s in one season in the last 13 years. The Suffolk native shot a two-under-par 69 to lead the tournament by three strokes. He opened the season with a school-record 67 in a dual match with Louisburg College at Sleepy Hole GC in Suffolk on August 29.
- Kyle Mutter joined Hunter in the top five finishing the first round tied for fifth place with a four-over-par 75. He shares fifth with a pair of players from SUNY Delhi and they all are one shot out of fourth, two out of third and three out of second place.
- Rounding out the counting scores for the Builders on Monday were sophomore Eric Johnston (T31st/86) and sophomore Cody Griffith (36th/88).
- The Builders trail first-day leader Lynchburg College by ten strokes as the Hornets lead the event with a 308 total. SUNY Delhi A team is in second with a 311, followed by Surry CC (NC) with a 314.
