IN BRIEF: For the first time in the 11-year history of the Glenn Heath Memorial Tournament, the Apprentice School captured the team title in its spring tournament named in honor of its former golf coach.
ON THE COURSE
- For the first time in school history, the Builders captured its annual Glenn Heath Memorial Tournament as they shot a 619 total to win the event by 10 strokes. Senior Ben Hunter capped his career by winning the medalist honor with a three-over-par 147 total to win by three strokes. He became the first Builder to win the Glenn Heath Memorial Shipbuilders Tournament.
- The annual spring tournament for the Builders was renamed the Glenn Heath Memorial Shipbuilders Tournament after the passing of the former Apprentice School golf coach in the summer of 2003.
- With the weather forecast on Tuesday calling for an all-day rain, the tournament was condensed to a one-day, two-round affair.
- In the opening round, the Builders shot a 315 to hold a three-stroke lead over Christopher Newport University B team and a five-shot lead over Shenandoah University in the seven-team affair.
- Hunter shared the first-round lead with Kyle Fuller of Randolph-Macon College as they both came in at three-over-par 75.
- In the second round, the Builders shaved 11 strokes off their first round total as they shot a 304 round to come in at 619. That 619 total equals the third lowest tournament total in the last 20 years.
- Four Builders finished in the top 15 individually as senior Kyle Mutter was fourth with a 151 total (77-74), junior Eric Johnston was seventh at 157 (81-76) and freshman Russell Fields was 15th with a 164 (82-82). Fellow freshman Austin Robbins was the fifth member for the Builders and came in tied for 24th with 171 (89-82).
- The Apprentice School also put in a second team in the event and they shot 364 in each round to finish with a 728 total. Chris Davis topped that team as he was tied for 19th at 169 (84-85).
- Freshman Brett Denson was next finishing tied for 31st with a 182, while Toby Tapman was 35th at 188, Cody Griffith was 36th at 192 and Forrest Barefoot was 37th with a 199.
OF NOTE
- This marked the first back-to-back tournament wins for the Builders under head coach Joey Maben. They captured the Virginia Wesleyan College Marlin Invitational last weekend in Virginia Beach.
- Hunter ends his career with 18 medalist honors in his career, winning five in his first two seasons and four each of his last two seasons. He ended with a 75.80 career scoring average and has the top three low single-season scoring averages.
