Golf Team Tied For 10th After Round One Of USCAA Nationals

EVENT: 2014 USCAA National Championships

COURSE: Penn State University Blue Course

IN BRIEF: The Apprentice School opened play Monday morning in the 2014 United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships and shot a combined 338 score to sit tied for 10th out of 22 teams at Penn State University.

ON THE COURSE

  • Senior Kyle Mutter is the low man for the Builders after day one as he came in with an eight-over-par 80 over the 7,112-yard par-72 course.  Mutter is attempting to become the second four-time USCAA Golf All-American for the Builders and is two strokes out of potential honors heading into Tuesday's final round.  He is in a tie for 18th place after day one.
  • Freshman Phillip Nelson is next for the Builders as he sits in a tie for 34th place with an 84 on Monday.
  • In the midst of a six-way tie for 60th place are freshmen Tim Moore and Toby Tapman who each carded an 87 to finish out the 338 total for the Builders.
  • Other participants after round one included junior Chris Davis (T90th/95), junior Forrest Barefoot (T100th/97) and freshman Perry Barber (104th/98).

TEAM STANDINGS

Two-time defending champion Daemen College (NY) leads the event with a 308 total for an eight-stroke lead over Rochester College and Cleary University both from Michigan.  Two more New York schools round out the top five as SUNY Delhi (319) and SUNY Canton (322) are within striking range of the Michigan tandem.

The second five are headed by New Hampshire Technical Institute (NHTI) with a 329, followed by Iowa Wesleyan College (330), West Virginia University Tech (331), Penn College (333) and then the Builders who are tied with SUNY Enviromental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) with 338.

FINAL ROUND

The final round of the tournament, and the fall season for the Builders, will start at 9 am in State College, Pa.
