One of head coach Joey Maben’s first duties was to name BJ Maben as his assistant coach. BJ, no stranger to area golf circles, had just completed a record-setting career for the Builders by being named Co-Apprentice School Athlete of the Year.

The younger Maben graduated in February 2009 as a maintenance pipefitter after being captain of the golf team for four years. He was a three-time USCAA All-American and a four-time winner of the Glenn Heath Award presented to the MVP of the golf team.

BJ was an All-Peninsula District golfer at Kecoughtan High School and a two-time Daily Press First Team All-Star selection. He earned his gold athletic award upon his graduation from the Apprentice School in February of 2008.

Maben held the school career scoring average record (76.65) until Ben Hunter finished his career in 2014 and took that record.  He holds four of the six lowest single season averages in the last 15 years. In 2019, BJ was inducted into The Apprentice School Builder Athletic Hall of Fame. A member of the Builder wing, he was recognized with other former standout athletes and coaches from 1990-current.

“I really enjoy working with my Dad as he has been very involved in my golf career,” BJ Maben said. “I enjoy working with the team and helping them with their decision making on the course”.
