NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Freshman Tamara Davis scored 13 points and hauled in 14 rebounds to lead four players in double figures for the Apprentice School as they defeated Allen University 70-43 on Monday night for its fifth straight victory.
The Lady Builders jumped out early racing to an 11-4 advantage on a layup by Tyisha Battle at the 14:54 mark. Allen, a NAIA Division I program from Columbia, SC, never trailed by less than seven for most of the first half and cut the lead to 24-21 on a layup from LeRonna Drayton with 1:22 left. From there the Lady Builders scored the last seven points of the half to push the lead to 31-21 on a pair of Battle free throws with six seconds left.
In the second half, the Lady Builders blew the game open scoring the first 12 points to take a 43-21 advantage on a Davis layup with 14:24 left. The lead grew to as much as 28 points on a Denise Hamilton layup for a 65-37 advantage with 4:03 left.
Apprentice school held the Lady Yellowjackets to a 16-of-57 performance from the field (28.1%) while outrebounding them 51-34. Senior Upenda Morton had 12 points for Apprentice School while Battle added a season high11 and Hamilton scored a season-best 10 points. Drayton scored a game-high 24 points for Allen (2-15).
The Lady Builders will now venture north to New York over the weekend for a pair of U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association contests. On Saturday night they'll face St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn in a 5 pm tipoff that will be broadcasted via the internet.
