Second Half Blast Lifts Apprentice School Over Penn State Fayette 80-51

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. - Freshman tournament MVP Tamara Davis scored 20 points and hauled in 13 rebounds, while senior all-tournament selection Rahshann Lewter recorded the first triple-double for the Apprentice School since 2004 with 18 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as the Lady Builders defeated Penn State Fayette 80-51 in the Great Ships Classic on Saturday.

In the earlier game, Southern Virginia jumped out to a 10-2 lead and cruised to a 69-43 victory over Penn State Greater Allegheny behind Kezia Ford and Tricia Dixon with 11 points each.

The first half saw the Nittany Lions and Lady Builders trade the lead four times and have seven ties.  Penn State Fayette opened the game on a 10-3 run to take an early 10-5 lead on a Tanea Preston jumper with 15:13 left.  Apprentice School chipped back into the game and tied it 15-all on a stick back from LaTorya Grimes with 10:07 remaining.  That stick back was a part of 11-2 run over a 5:43 span which put the Lady Builders up 24-17 on a Shameka Warren jumper with 5:36 left. Fayette tied the game up for the last time on a Preston jumper with 2:14 left to cap a 14-7 spurt to tie the game at 31-all.

In the second half, the Lady Builders came out of the locker room smoking hot as they scored the first 14 points of the half in a 3:31 span.  Upenda Morton ended that spurt with a layup off a feed from Davis with 16:29 left.  After a Carey Cox layup for Fayette, the Lady Builders scored the next 10 points over a 4:07 span as a Lewter layup put Apprentice School ahead 59-33 with 11:54 left.  From there, the lead was never less than 23 points.

Morton recorded 17 points for the Lady Builders (2-1) who held Penn State Fayette (0-3) to 6-for-28 shooting (21.4%) in the second half.  Apprentice School held a commanding 64-45 advantage on the boards, including a nearly 2-to-1 advantage on the offensive boards (29-15).  Four Lady Builders were in double figures in rebounding as sophomore Valleri West hauled in 15 (11 on the offensive boards), Davis had 13, freshman LaTorya Grimes had a season-high 12 rebounds and Lewter hauled in 10.

Joining Lewter and Davis on the All-Great Ships Classic team was Preston of Fayette (who had a team-high 11 points Saturday), Chanelle Quallis of Penn State Greater Allegheny and Dixon from Southern Virginia.

Next up for the Lady Builders will be the Turkey Shootout at Methodist University on Saturday as they face College of Notre Dame (Md.) at 6 pm at the Riddle Center in Fayetteville, NC.
