Lady Builders Sweep Home Weekend With 90-44 Win Over Penn State Fayette

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Freshman Danita Whitaker scored 15 points and earned All-Great Ships Classic honors as The Apprentice School defeated Penn State Fayette 90-44 in the final game of the Great Ships Classic on Saturday.

Apprentice School (5-0) jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes on a Tyisha Battle free throw with 15:09 left.  They followed that five minute burst with a 10-4 run over the next 5:04 to take a 20-6 lead on a 3-pointer from Ashley Johnson with 10:05 left in the half.  In the second half, the Lady Lions were held scoreless in the first 5:42 before a Kasey Ruble jumper with 14:18 left made the score 55-22 as the Lady Builders scored the first 10 points of the half.

Joining Whitaker on the All-Great Ships Classic team was teammate Courtney Collins who added 10 points and five rebounds.  Battle had 11 points and six rebounds, while Johnson had 13 points and LaTorya Grimes added 14 points for Apprentice School.  Kaitlyn Novak scored 10 points to lead Penn State Fayette while Ruble who had eight points was named to the All-Classic team.

In the opening game on Saturday, Nicole Tolman had 20 points and 15 rebounds as Southern Virginia defeated Briarcliffe 78-67.  Tolman was named to the All-Classic team along with Briarcliffe's Ifeayni Ofili who had 26 points to lead the Seahawks.

Apprentice School now goes on the road on November 29 to face Goucher College in a 6 pm tipoff outside of Baltimore, Md.
