TOWSON, MD. – Freshman Courtney Collins scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half as the Apprentice School defeated Goucher College 69-59 on Monday night at Decker Sports & Rec Center on the Goucher campus.
Goucher tied the game twice with the last being 10-all on a Precious Kollock jumper with 10:51 left. Apprentice School went on a 16-6 run over the next 7:50 to take a 26-16 advantage on a Tamara Davis layup with 3:01 left. The Lady Builders pushed the advantage to 11 points on a LaTorya Grimes jumper with 15 seconds left in the first half for a 33-22 lead heading into halftime.
In the second half the Lady Builders scored the first six points to take a 39-22 lead on a Collins layup with 17:24 left. The lead grew to 22 points at 54-32 with 12:28 remaining on a Collins jumper. Goucher cut the lead down to nine points on an Amy Smith 3-pointer with 41 seconds left, but a Collins free throw with 19 seconds left gave the Lady Builders a 69-59 lead and eventual win.
Danita Whitaker added 12 points for the Lady Builders who shot just under 50% from the floor (29-of-59/49.2%). Davis had a game-high 10 rebounds with her seven points. Goucher was paced by Sharnell Huff and Kiara Doughty with 12 points each.
Apprentice School will now travel to Salisbury, Md. to face Salisbury University in the Optimist Classic on Saturday night at 6 pm. The win gave the Lady Builders (6-0) their best start in school history. The previous best start was in the 1999-2000 season when they opened 5-0 en route to a 23-5 record.
