Quick Start Leads To 76-39 Lady Builders Win Over Bennett In MLK Classic

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – A 20-6 start in the first ten minutes proved to be the jump start for the Apprentice School Lady Builders on Friday night as they blasted Bennett College 76-39 in day two of the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Classic.

Apprentice School (10-5) jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 14:49 mark on a jumper from Tamara Davis.  After a bucket from Janay Walker, the Lady Builders went on another 10-2 run to take the 20-6 lead with 10:43 left on a layup from Jasmine Pringle.

Bennett (4-4) cut the deficit to 31-20 on a Walker 3-pointer with 3:42 left.  From there, the Lady Builders closed the half scoring the final seven points to take a 41-20 lead on a jumper from Ashley Johnson with 22 seconds left.

To start the second half Apprentice School pushed the lead to 45-20 on a pair of free throws and a layup from Courtney Collins.  Apprentice School closed out the game outscoring the Belles 11-2 in the last 3:46 with a Denise Hamilton layup providing the final 76-39 margin.

Davis and Collins were the leading scorers for Apprentice School with 12 points each, while Danita Whitaker had 11 points and nine rebounds.  Davis recorded her second straight double-double with a team-high 12 rebounds.    Shirleta Hackett paced Bennett with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Apprentice School will close out its three-games in the four-day classic with a matchup with Robert Morris University Springfield at 8 pm on Saturday night.  The Eagles, who defeated Rhema Bible College 66-54 in Friday's opener, are ranked fourth in the latest U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Coaches Poll while Apprentice School is ranked fifth.
