Lady Builders Take 85-65 Win Over Penn State Fayette

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Sophomore Courtney Collins scored 18 points with 10 rebounds and All-Great Ships Classic selection Jasmine Pringle added 13 points to lead four in double figures as Apprentice School defeated Penn State Fayette 85-65 in the Great Ships Classic on Saturday.

The Lions jumped out of the gates quickly racing out to an 11-4 lead on a Kasey Ruble layup with 15:55 left.  The lead remained at seven points as Heather Burton's jumper with 14:18 left kept Fayette ahead 15-8.   

At that point, the Lady Builders cranked up defensively and went on a 16-1 run over the next 5:17 to take a 24-16 advantage on a pair of Collins free throws with 9:01 left.  That lead eventually grew to 36-22 on a pair of Martika Williams free throws with 5:52 left.  The Lady Builders closed the half on an 8-1 run over the last two minutes to lead 50-31 on a Tamara Davis jumper.

In the second half, the Lady Builders used an 8-0 run over a 3:01 span to take their largest lead of the night at 77-49 on a free throw by Collins with 5:37 left.  Fayette responded with eight straight points over the next 87 seconds as Caitlyn Wontroba hit a layup with 4:10 left to cut the deficit to 77-57.

Arynn Easom and Denise Hamilton chipped in 10 points each for Apprentice School (5-0) while Davis was high on the boards with 11.  The Lady Builders return to the home floor on Tuesday night at 6 pm when they host N.C. Wesleyan College.

Christina Augustin of Southern Virginia was named tournament MVP, while teammate Amaris Newkirk joined her on the All-Classic team.  Morgan Kavanaugh of Christendom was named along with Ruble and Pringle.
