NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Sophomore Courtney Collins scored 14 points to lead three in double figures as the Apprentice School closed its November portion of the schedule with a 73-68 win over N.C. Wesleyan College on Tuesday night.
The Bishops jumped out early leading 9-5 with 14:22 left on a Tiffany Bell layup. From there the Lady Builders went on a 21-2 run to lead 26-11 on a Denise Hamilton free throw with 6:40 left in the half. N.C. Wesleyan wouldn't go away as they scored the next nine points to cut that lead down to 26-20 on a Bell jumper with 2:59 left in the half.
In the second half, the Battling Bishops proved their name cutting an eight-point halftime deficit to 31-28 on a Samantha Urquhart layup with 17:52 left. Apprentice School responded with 15-4 run over the next 3:10 with a Collins layup giving the hosts a 46-32 lead with 14:42 remaining. The lead grew to 59-44 with 9:14 left on a Hamilton layup before the Bishops clawed their way back into the game as Shanice Goree drained a pair of free throws with 1:53 left for a 69-65 game.
Jasmine Pringle and Danita Whitaker each scored 11 points for Apprentice School (6-0) while Tamara Davis topped the team in rebounds with 12.
Apprentice School is now off until December 4 when they host USA South member Methodist University for a 2 pm tip.
