Lady Builders Set Regular Season Wins Mark With 58-37 Triumph Over Shock

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Senior Denise Hamilton scored 18 points and sophomore Christina Licano added 10 points as the Apprentice School defeated NCAA Division II Washington Adventist 58-37 to end the regular season on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Lady Builders set a school record for most regular season wins as they ended 23-2.  The 2000-01 team finished the regular season with a 22-3 record en route to two wins at nationals ending with a school best record of 24-3.

Washington Adventist scored the first points of the game on a pair of Quianna Tiggle free throws 51 seconds into the contest, but that proved to be the only lead of the night for the Shock.  Apprentice School responded with a 17-4 flurry over the next eight minutes to take a 17-6 lead on a pair of Danita Whitaker free throws with 10:47 left.  The Shock cut that margin with a 6-0 run to trail 17-12 on a jumper from Andrea Wilson with 5:40 left but that was as close as they got for the game.

In the second half, the Lady Builders turned up the defense as the Shock didn't break double figures in points scored for the half until a layup from Wilson with 6:02 remaining.  Apprentice School opened the half with a 20-4 run to take a commanding 47-23 lead on a Licano free throw with 8:52 left.

Tamara Davis paced Apprentice School on the boards with a game-high 11 while senior Ashley Johnson and sophomore Danita Whitaker had seven points apiece for the Lady Builders.  Tiggle was the lone double figure scorer for Washington Adventist (6-17) with 12 points, while Wilson had 10 rebounds to lead the team on the boards.
