First Half Run Sinks Lady Builders In Loss To Briarcliffe

WEST HEMPSTEAD, NY – Briarcliffe College used a 14-0 run in the first half to take control of the game and defeat Apprentice School 71-40 on Friday night at Island Gardens in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association matchup.

Shanae Hilliard hit a layup at the 17:34 mark to tie the game at 4-all before Briarcliffe went on a 14-0 run.  A layup from Andrea Desvignes with 15:23 left started the burst and a Jessica Little jumper with 8:12 remaining put the hosts up 18-4. 

Apprentice School's April McCoy stopped the drought for the Lady Builders with a free throw with 6:52 left.  Her free throw started a 7-0 flurry for the Lady Builders which cut the lead to 18-11 on a Danita Whitaker jumper with 5:32 left.  Briarcliffe responded with the next 11 points to lead 29-11 on a Simone Thomas jumper with 32 seconds left.  McCoy closed the half on a jumper to bring Apprentice School to 29-13.

In the second half, the Lady Builders cut the deficit to 12 points early as they scored the first four points on a Whitaker jumper and a pair of free throws.  Briarcliffe scored 12 of the next 14 points to lead 41-19 on a pair of Desvignes free throws with 14:56 left.  Apprentice School cut the deficit to 17 points on two occasioins with a Kenya Wilkerson free throw at the 7:04 mark being the last time at 52-35.

Little was the leading scorer for Briarcliffe with 18 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots.  Wilkerson was the leading scorer for Apprentice School with 13 points, while Whitaker and Hilliard had eight points.  Whitaker topped all rebounders with 14 for the Lady Builders.

Apprentice School will now play St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn at Brooklyn Tech High School on Saturday night at 7:30 pm.
