Basketball Teams Face Key USCAA Weekend Starting With Lady Builders Tonight

Both Apprentice School basketball teams face key U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association contests this weekend as bids to the national championships are scheduled to be awarded in two weeks.

The Lady Builders start the weekend in Lynchburg tonight when they face Virginia University of Lynchburg at 7 pm in the City Armory.  This will be the first of two meetings this month with the Dragons as they'll return the game to the Lady Builders on Feb. 24 for Senior Day.  These teams met once last year as Apprentice School  took a 67-63 decision in Newport News.

VUL  enters the game with a 15-9 record after defeating Morris College 70-59 on Jan. 26 in South Carolina.  Alliyah Floyd leads the team in scoring (13.6 ppg) and is followed by Ebony Ellis at 13.1 points and a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game.

The Apprentice School (9-10) enters after defeating Washington Adventist University 61-57 on January 23.  Junior Danita Whitaker leads the team in scoring (11.9 ppg), rebounds (10.9 rpg) and field goal percentage (45.3%).  Sophomore Shanae Hilliard is next in scoring (10.1 ppg) and is second in steals (38).

The men's team returns to the home hardwood on Saturday afternoon for a 2pm tip against in-state rival Southern Virginia University.  These teams met last Saturday with Southern Virginia winning 96-87 in overtime in Buena Vista.

Southern Virginia (11-4) is topped in scoring by Casey Nye with 15.9 points per game followed by Isaac Jacobson at 14.7 and a team best 5.7 rebounds per game.  The Knights lost on Wednesday night at Frostburg State 87-84 in their last outing.

Apprentice is headed by senior Tevin Andrews with 18.9 ppg and a team best 9.6 rebounds per game.  Sophomore Johnnie Ferebee follows him in scoring at 11.3 ppg and sophomore Lavontae Thomas is next at 10.4 ppg.
