Lady Builders Stumble At Home In 52-38 Loss To Southern Virginia

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. – Sophomore Shanae Hilliard had 18 points, six rebounds and four steals to lead the Apprentice School on Tuesday night as they fell 52-38 to Southern Virginia University in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The Lady Builders jumped out quickly leading 9-4 with 14:08 left on a layup from Kenya Wilkerson.  Southern Virginia got themselves some breathing room holding the Apprentice School scoreless for nearly nine minutes as part of a 22-3 run to close the half leading 26-12 as Ann Kuroki drained a 3-pointer at the halftime horn.

In the second half, the Lady Builders trimmed the deficit down to eight points as Hilliard drained her second 3-pointer of the half with 12:25 for a 37-29 SVU lead.  The Knights responded with the next seven points to take the advantage back out to 15 points on a free throw from Amaris Newkirk to lead 44-29 with 7:28 left.

From there a Brittanie Herriott 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 12 points at 46-34 with 6:13 left but that was as close as the Lady Builders got.

Apprentice School (9-12), which saw a 22-game home court winning streak fall, had a pair of double-figure rebounders in Danita Whitaker (12) and April McCoy (10).  The last home loss for the Lady Builders was on Feb. 5, 2011 to Southern Virginia 65-58.

Southern Virginia (10-7) was topped by Newkirk and Abigail Logan with 15 points each and Kuroki with 14.  Crystal Cleveland topped them on the boards with 16, followed by Logan with 13.

The Lady Builders now travel to Denmark, SC to face NAIA Division I Voorhees College in a 2 pm tip on Saturday.
