Lanica Williams-Tallon Accepts Position At Appalachian State

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. -- Apprentice School head coach Lanica Williams-Tallon has resigned her position with the Lady Builders effective June 14.  She has joined the coaching staff at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.

Williams-Tallon, who finished her sixth year with a 90-51 career record, coached two U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association All-Americans, five honorable mention USCAA All-Americans and two USCAA All-Academic selections.  Her best season was in 2011-12 when the Lady Builders opened with 10 straight wins en route to a school-record 23-4 campaign.

"I am sincerely grateful for the opportunity to have led the women's basketball program for the last six years," she said.  "I've developed long lasting bonds with my staff, players, administrative and support staff, academic, and craft instructors that cannot be broken.  Although the departure is bittersweet, I am excited about the direction of the program, and am confident that the future of the women's basketball program is bright." 

Appalachian State University is an NCAA Division I school that will compete in the Southern Conference for the 2013-14 season.  They will then transition to the Sun Belt Conference in 2014-15.

A native of Newport News, Williams-Tallon was a three-year starter at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, N.C. after a year at Alabama A&M.  She was a key cog in Lenoir-Rhyne's first South Atlantic Conference Tournament Championship and NCAA Division II Tournament berth in 2002-03, when she averaged 20 points per game in the SAC Tournament. Her college coach at Lenoir-Rhyne was former Apprentice School coach Karen Barefoot.

"I'd like to personally thank Keisha Pexton, Athletics Director, for believing in my vision and also providing undying support and guidance," Williams-Tallon said.  "My staff, coaches Dickran Parunak and Jessica Wright for their loyalty and tireless work ethic.  And most importantly every player that I've coached in the last six seasons, simply for allowing me to be part of their journey.  I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to coach such wonderful people at a special school."
