ON THE COURT: Visiting St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn shot a blistering 58.3% in the second half and pulled away for a 67-60 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association victory over The Apprentice School on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Builders opened quickly as a pair of Shanae Hilliard 3-pointers put the hosts up 8-3 in the first 1:17. That lead grew to 12-4 on an April McCoy jumper with 17:11 remaining. St. Joseph's used a 14-3 run to take an 18-15 lead on a Jennifer Miller jumper with 10:51 left in the half.
Apprentice School responded with a 14-2 run to take its largest lead of the game at 29-20 after a pair of Courtney Collins jumpers, the last being with 5:14 left in the half. St. Joseph's closed the half on a 10-1 run to tie the game 30-all on a Megan Moran jumper with 36 seconds left in the half.
In the second half, the guests opened on a 15-4 run to take its largest lead of the game on an Erica Eddy jumper with 13:18 left to lead 45-34. The Lady Builders made one run to get back into the game as they outscored the Lady Bears 18-4 over the ensuing 4:16 to take a 52-49 lead on a Hilliard 3-pointer with 9:02 left.
After trading buckets for a couple minutes, a layup from Taylor Raccuglia layup with 5:36 left put the guests ahead to stay.
BEHIND THE BOXSCORE
- Collins and Hilliard were the leading scorers for the Lady Builders with 14 points apiece.
- Collins added seven rebounds, five steals and four assists, while Hilliard had three steals and was 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
- Apprentice School shot a season low 25.6% from the field (21-of-82), while St. Joseph's shot 49.1% (27-of-55).
- The Lady Bears outrebounded Apprentice School 51-47 and held a 32-24 points in the paint advantage.
- The win for St. Joseph's was the second straight in the series and marks the first consecutive wins for the Lady Bears over Apprentice since 2003-2004.
