Second Half Rally Falls Short As Lady Builders Lose 75-68 At Maine-Fort Kent

ON THE COURT: A blistering hot Maine-Fort Kent Lady Bengals held off a frantic second-half rally by The Apprentice School to score a 75-68 win on Friday night in a U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association contest.

The hosts started the game 15-of-24 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes to take a 42-24 lead into halftime as Danielle Carrillo drained a 22-foot jumper with three seconds left in the half for the 18-point halftime advantage.

In the second half, the lead grew to as much as 26 points at the 12 minute mark.  Kayla Richards hit a pair of free throws with 10:34 left to give the Lady Bengals a lead of 63-39.  Apprentice School mounted a furious comeback as a pair of Shanae Hilliard 3-pointers and a Danita Whitaker jumper ended a 29-8 run as the Lady Builders trailed 71-68 with 16 seconds left. 

The hosts hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • Apprentice School didn't shoot the ball that poorly – hitting 22-of-51 from the floor (43.1%), but saw the hosts go wild in the first half to trail by 18.
  • Senior Courtney Collins continued her strong play as of late scoring a game-high 25 points and hauling in seven rebounds with three steals.    She has averaged 23 points and five rebounds in the last three games.
  • Joining her in double figures was Whitaker (13 points/5 rebounds) and Hilliard (12 points).
  • Kenya Wilkerson had seven assists and four steals, while April McCoy had seven points, five rebounds and two blocked shots.
  • The Lady Bengals were paced by Jennifer Colpitts with 16 points, Sam Carapellucci with 15 points, five rebounds and Alexis Warne with 11 points.  They finished 22-of-43 from the floor (51.2%) and 26-of-32 from the foul line (81.3%).  They were 5-of-7 from 3-point range (71.4%) while being out-rebounded 32-28.
