Lady Builders Catch Wasps For 71-65 Win

ON THE COURT:  The Apprentice School Lady Builders concluded a two-game swing against the Old Dominion Athletic Conference as they pulled away in the second half for a 71-65 win over homestanding Emory & Henry College.

In a first half that was a half of runs, the Apprentice School started quickly racing out to an 8-0 lead on a layup from Courtney Collins with 16:52 left.  Emory & Henry returned that run with a 20-4 over the next 8:22 to lead 20-12 on a 3-pointer from Kristie Langley with 8:48 left. 

The Builders followed that run with a 17-8 spurt to take a 29-28 lead on a layup from April McCoy with 38 seconds left.  The Wasps stung for the last two points on free throws from Anna Green and JoBeth Wright to lead 30-29 at halftime.

In the second half, the teams traded the lead three times in the first minute as a layup from Collins at the 19 minute mark gave the Lady Builders a 33-32 lead.  Apprentice School went on a 13-4 flurry over the next 5:41 to push the lead to 46-36 on a Kenya Wilkerson layup with 13:34 left.

Emory & Henry cut the lead to 66-62 on a 3-pointer from Megan Jacoby with 39 seconds left, but the Lady Builders were 5-of-6 from the line in the final 36 seconds to ice the win.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE
  • Collins was the leading scorer on the night with 18 points and five rebounds for Apprentice School.
  • Wilkerson had her second stat sheet stuffing game of the weekend with 15 points, seven rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
  • McCoy followed with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.
  • Freshman Julissa Riddick had a season-high 13 rebounds which topped her previous high of 11 set in Friday night's win over Washington & Lee.
  • The Lady Builders were 28-of-72 from the floor (38.9%) 2-of-10 from 3-point land (20%) and were 13-of-24 (54.2%) from the foul line. 
  • Emory & Henry was paced by Jacoby with 15, Karina Farr with 14 and Langley with 13.
  • This concluded what was a scheduled eight-game road swing as the Lady Builders went 5-2 on it.  They had a game scheduled with Ferrum College in December that was postponed until January 12 due to weather.
NEXT UP

The Lady Builders return to the friendly confines of Apprentice Athletic Center to have a rematch with the University of Maine-Fort Kent on January 8 at 5 pm.  These teams played on December 13 with UMFK taking a 75-68 victory.
