Bench Strength Leads Lady Builders Over Southern Virginia 64-52

ON THE COURT:
Six different players combined to score 47 points off the bench on Monday night, as the Apprentice School built a 17-point halftime lead and held on for a 64-52 win over Southern Virginia University. 
The Lady Builders were led by 14 points apiece from reserves Courtney Collins, Shanae Hilliard and Danita Whitaker. Whitaker pieced together a stellar performance from the field, missing just one shot in eight attempts to score her 14 points in just 16 minutes played. Hilliard knocked down four three-pointers in the game, including a run-stopping dagger in the final four minutes.
Southern Virginia showed life late in the game, cutting a 19-point deficit to just 11 with 4:11 remaining. The 12-4 run spanned just 3:36 of game time late as the Knights' late spurt nearly pulled them back within single digits. Hilliard, though, got a pass from Kenya Wilkerson on the left side and buried a long trey from the wing with 3:53 left, stunting the Southern Virginia comeback.
Whitaker's 7-for-8 performance in the game included a perfect 6-for-6 in the first half, leading all scorers with 12 points. She helped the Lady Builders shoot 47.2% from the field in the first half, on 17-of-36 shooting. The Apprentice defense forced 14 first-half turnovers and scored 17 points off of giveaways.
The Lady Builders dominated the glass, outrebounding the Knights by ten in the game, 44-34, including 22 offensive boards. Julissa Riddick led all players with 12 boards, while Southern Virginia's Crystal Cleveland added 12 for the Knights. Cleveland also had seven points and five blocked shots to lead the way for SVU.
 

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • The Lady Builders won their fifth straight game at home, and improved to 4-0 on the season in their new building
  • Wilkerson had six points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds for the Lady Builders.
  • Riddick's 12 boards was her fifth double-figure rebounding performance of the season
  • Southern Virginia was just 8-20 from the floor in the first half, marking the seventh straight period the Builders opponent failed to knock down at least 10 shots
  • Apprentice School was 24-of-69 (34.8%) from the floor, 5-for-15 from 3-point range (33.3%) and 11-of-14 from the foul line (78.6%).
