RECORDS: Apprentice School 19-4; Washington Adventist 9-16

RANKINGS (USCAA Division I): Apprentice School #4; Washington Adventist #18

LOCATION: Takoma Park, MD/The Pitt

ON THE COURT: Junior Shanae Hilliard scored 22 points including seven 3-pointers, but her last one with 4:24 left gave the visiting Apprentice School Lady Builders a lead to stay in a 71-70 win over Washington Adventist University on Sunday afternoon.

Hilliard set a career-high with those seven 3-pointers, as she was 7-for-14 from behind the arc.  Her last 3-pointer not only gave the Lady Builders a lead they didn't relinquish, but was the 100th of Hilliard's career in 70 games.

The Lady Builders trailed 42-31 with 19:11 left in the game as Re'Gene Watson scored on a layup.  Apprentice School used a 13-2 run over a 4:40 span to take its first lead of the second half at 49-48 on a pair of Courtney Collins free throws with 11:35 left.

Following some trading of buckets, the Shock took the lead back and held a 57-54 advantage with 5:45 left on a pair of Courtney Cayard free throws.  April McCoy hit a pair of free throws with 4:54 left to trim the margin to 57-56.  After a missed free throw, Bria Hill found Hilliard for the 3-pointer which gave the Lady Builders a 61-59 lead with 4:24 left.  That lead grew to five points on a Collins layup with 3:50 left as Apprentice School held a 64-59 lead.

The Shock had a run in them as they tied the game at 68-all with 49 seconds left on a jumper from Rashawnda Carter.  Apprentice School scored on a layup from Kelsey Daniels and a free throw from Kenya Wilkerson before a Carter layup with 14 seconds left brought the eventual final margin of 71-70.

BEHIND THE BOXSCORE

  • Hilliard not only became the third Lady Builder in history to hit 100 3-pointers, she set the school single-season 3-pointers made mark with 56.  The former mark was 50 by Tanga Williams in the 2001-02 season.
  • She missed the single-game record of eight 3-pointers held by Tanga Williams vs. Goucher College on Jan. 5, 2002.  The seven equals the second-most in Lady Builder history as she joined Williams who hit seven against Mary Baldwin on Feb. 15, 2000.
  • The 22 points for Hilliard were a season high and three away from her career high set last year at St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn).  That marked her sixth game this year of at least four 3-pointers made.
  • Daniels set a season-high with her 20 point outing on Sunday.  She had scored 12 in the first meeting with Bennett College back on November 23.
  • Collins recorded her second double-double of the year with 12 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.  Her other double-double also came against Bennett on November 23 with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

NEXT UP – BENNETT

The Lady Builders will visit Greensboro, NC on Wednesday at 6 pm to face Bennett College in a re-scheduled contest from last Thursday's wintry weather.
