Lady Builders Wear Down Regent 84-66

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Apprentice School women's basketball wore down Regent University 84-66 to snap a three-game losing streak on Thursday evening.

ON THE COURT: The Lady Builders jumped out to a 20-5 lead halfway through the first quarter before the Royals went on a 10-3 run to end the quarter. Regent started the second quarter with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to one. The Builders extended their lead to six with a couple baskets by Aquazia Jones and Sabre Clegg before the Royals tied the game at 35 apiece with just under five minutes remaining. A couple baskets by Alexis Wethington and a layup by Aquazia Jones gave The Apprentice School a four-point cushion at the break. The Lady Builders shot 53% from the floor and were ledy by Aquazia Jones' 14 points. Regent stayed close with The Apprentice School by grabbing 14 offensive boards in the first half alone. The Lady Builders wore down the Royals in the second half shooting 56% and holding the Royals to 34% from the floor. Sabre Clegg was dominant in the second half by scoring 16 points and grabbing nine rebounds.

BEHIND THE BOX SCORE: 

  • The Lady Builders shot 55% from the field for the game and scored 50 points in the paint.
  • Aquazia Jones scored a game-high 25 points. She added six assists and five rebounds.
  • Sabre Clegg came off the bench and added a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds.
  • Alexis Wethington came close to notching a triple-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists.
  • Taylor McCaslin added 11 points and five boards.
  • Anastasia Tunis contributed eight points and six assists.
  • The Lady Builders were outrebounded 41-39 and scored six second-chance points while Regent had 20 second-chance off 19 offensive rebounds.

The Lady Builders return to action this weekend as they host Voorhees College and Warren Wilson as part of the MLK Classic at the Apprentice Athletic Center. The Lady Builders look to avenge an 80-55 loss to Voorhees early in the season with a 12 p.m. tip on Saturday afternoon. The Apprentice School face Warren Wilson on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
