Builders Sweep Owls in Conference Action

Builders Sweep Owls in Conference Action

In their first conference matchups of the season, The Apprentice School completed a sweep over the visiting Warren Wilson Owls on Saturday evening at the Apprentice Athletic Center. The men's basketball team started the evening with a 68-58 victory over the Owls before the women's basketball team fought back from a 16-point deficit to clinch the victory on an Aquazia Jones layup at the buzzer to steal a 62-60 victory.

The Builders jumped out to an early lead on the short-handed Owls with a 40-21 advantage at the break. The lead climbed to 24 before the Owls converted shots down the stretch to close the gap to ten to kick off conference play. The Builders had three players in double-figures with Corey Joyner leading the team with 14 points and eight rebounds. Brandon Joyner added 11 points while Ken Smith contributed 10 for the team. The team held the Owls, who was led by Brent Davis with 24 points, to 36% from the floor.

In the night cap, the Lady Builders came out shooting in the first quarter to take a 22-17 lead. Cold shooting in the second quarter allowed the Owls to take momentum of the game and take a 32-26 lead at the break. After a tightly contested third quarter, the Lady Builders came back from a 16 point deficit in the fourth quarter when an Aquazia Jones three-pointer gave the Lady Builders a 60-59 lead with 2:38 remaining in the game. After an Owls' free throw knotted the game at 60 apiece with 1:29 remaining, both teams had opportunities to take the lead. After a missed three pointer with 25 seconds left in the game, the Owls advanced the ball and called a time out. Coming out the time out, the Lady Builders pressured the Owls defensively and allowed Aquazia Jones to force a turnover at midcourt and hustled to convert the game-winning layup as time expired.

The Builders continue conference action next weekend with a road trip to Clinton College and Johnson & Wales.
