Chevres Finishes Second At 133 In Citadel Open To Lead Wrestlers

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Apprentice School wrestling team competed for the first time at the Citadel Open in McAlister Field House on Saturday and came away with several strong finishes.

Junior Marcus Chevres finished second at 133 pounds as he went 5-1 on the day to top six wrestlers who all finished in the top seven in their respective weight classes.  No team scores were kept in the event that saw 350-entries from all over the southeast region.

Chevres opened the event with a 12-2 major decision victory over Matt Dunton of South Florida.  He recorded a 6-3 win over Tyquain English (Limestone), 6-4 over Acton Pifer (Appalachian State) and won by default over Graceson Pastrik (Belmont Abbey) in the quarterfinals.  His semifinal match was another major decision win, 9-2, over Casey Gashaw of St. Andrews.  Chevres lost to Alex Radsky of Davidson 8-2 in the final.

Also winning five bouts on Saturday was junior Will Sexton who earned a top five finish at 141 pounds.   He started with a win by fall in 3:42 over Josh Montgomery of Spartanburg Methodist before falling 4-3 to eventual fourth-place finisher Steve DeAugustino of Central Florida.  Sexton then ripped off four wins in the wrestlebacks with a pair of those by fall before losing 4-2 to DeAugustino in the match that would've put him going for third place.

Three wrestlers won three matches apiece as they all finished in the top seven.  Sophomore Odis Wesby went 3-2 at 141 pounds to finish in the top seven winning one match by tech fall and one in a major decision.  Freshman Malachi Underwood went 3-2 at 149 pounds to finish in the top seven winning one match by fall.  Junior Ricky Anderson went 3-1 at 157 pounds to finish in the top five and won all three of those bouts by fall.

Apprentice School will now travel to Collegeville, Pa. to participate in the Ursinus Fall Brawl on November 13.
