Wrestlers Go Winless At Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, VA. – The Apprentice School wrestling team competed on Friday in the 31st annual Virginia Duals and came out on the low end of three dual matches.  York College defeated the Builders 30-16 in the opener, while Johns Hopkins scored a 25-15 victory and St. Andrews defeated the Builders 23-22 in the final match.

Against York, the Builders got victories by Marcus Chevres at 133 pounds (10-0 major decision), Ricky Anderson at 157 pounds (fall in 3:07), Steven Ours at 174 pounds (10-8 decision) and Jeremy Diley at heavyweight (3-2 decision).  Chevres' win put the Builders up 4-3, but the Spartans won five of the next seven bouts with four of those coming by pin to take the win.

The next match against Johns Hopkins saw the Blue Jays jump out to a 9-0 lead after 141 pounds before the Builders scored victories in three of the next four bouts.  BJ Compton started with a 10-3 decision at 149 pounds before Anderson recorded his second win by fall in the event winning in 4:20 to tie the match 9-all.  After losing at 165 by major decision, the Builders took the lead as Ours scored his first fall of the event in 2:22 at 174 pounds for a 15-13 lead.  Johns Hopkins took victories in the final three bouts for the 25-15 win.

In the final match against St. Andrews, the dual went down to criteria as the Knights won six individual bouts to the Builders four to gain the point for the victory in the match that ended in a 22-22 tie.  Chevres earned a pin at 133 pounds in 3:58 over Sterling Perry to put the Builders up 6-3.  St. Andrews scored decision victories in the next two bouts to take a 9-6 lead.  Kyle Spruill came in at 157 pounds and won a 14-4 major decision over Troy Baranik to put Apprentice School back up 10-9.  That win started the teams alternating victories throughout the rest of the dual as a pin for St. Andrews at heavyweight tied the match 22-all.

Apprentice School (10-6) will next wrestle on January 15 in Lexington, Va. at the Washington & Lee Invitational.
