Wrestling Team Earns Honors On Tuesday

Ours Named USCAA Wrestler Of The Week

Apprentice school wrestling junior Steven Ours was named on Tuesday as the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 9.

Ours, a junior electrician apprentice from Alexandria, Va., went 3-0 at the Virginia Duals wrestling at 174 pounds.  He scored wins over eventual tournament champion York College, Pa. (10-8 decision), Johns Hopkins (fall in 2:22) and St. Andrews Presbyterian (fall in 1:32).  On the year he is 18-9 and second on the team in falls with 12.

The wrestling team will compete this weekend at the Washington & Lee Invitational in Lexington, Va. on January 15.  Ours marks the fifth time the team has been recognized by the USCAA this season.

 

Anderson, Butler To Participate In American Airlines Champions Challenge Saturday

For the second year in a row, a pair of Apprentice School wrestling team members will take part in the American Airlines Champions Challenge this Saturday in Orlando, Florida at The Venue on the campus of the University of Central Florida. 

Junior 157-pounder Ricky Anderson will compete for the National Collegiate Wrestling Association All-Star team as they face an All-Star team from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).  Anderson, an outside machinist apprentice from Chesapeake, Va., currently has a record of 27-4 and has won 22 matches by fall.  He'll wrestle Brad Cusatis of Hastings College (Neb.) who is currently ranked ninth in the NAIA and a two-time NAIA National Tournament qualifier.

Assistant coach Jovon Butler will serve as one of the coaches for the NCWA team.  Butler, in his fourth year as an assistant coach, was a three-time NCWA All-American (2003-05) who is ranked in the all-time top ten in career wins with 87.

Last year Marcus Chevres and Will Harcum wrestled while Bruce Shumaker served as the head coach.
