Wrestlers Take Fourth At NCWA National Duals - Anderson Sets Single Season Falls Record

DALTON, GA. – The Apprentice School wrestling team went 2-2 on Saturday and finished fourth out of 20 teams in the 2011 National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Dual Championships at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.

Sophomore Kyle Spruill and junior BJ Compton each went 4-0 on the weekend, while juniors Ricky Anderson and Marcus Chevres each went 5-1.  Anderson won all five of his matches by fall which enabled him to break the school single-season falls record as he now has 29 on the year.  Sophomore Kevin Gray also went 3-1 at 235 pounds.

Apprentice School now will compete in the first United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Invitational next weekend in DuBois, Pa.

APPRENTICE SCHOOL 60, MIDDLE TENN. STATE 0

The Builders opened Saturday with winning five matches by fall, two by decision and four forfeits as they blanked Middle Tennessee State 60-0.  Marcus Chevres scored the first fall in 37 seconds as 133 pounds, only to be nearly topped by Ricky Anderson who won at 157 pounds in 39 seconds.  Willie Crawford won in 5:57 at 197 pounds, while Kevin Gray (2:52) at 235 and Jeremy Diley (2:58) at heavyweight closed out the 60-0 win.

APPRENTICE SCHOOL 24, WEST CHESTER 19

After losing in the 125 pound match, the Builders took a 6-3 lead as Marcus Chevres scored a win in 2:28 at 133 pounds.  West Chester tied the dual at 6-all with a win at 141 but BJ Compton answered at 149 pounds scoring a takedown in overtime to earn a 6-4 decision and put Apprentice up 9-6.

Ricky Anderson scored another quick fall at 157 pounds to win his 28th match on the year by fall which tied the school single season record.  His win in 48 seconds gave the Builders a working margin up 15-9.  After a tough loss at 165 pounds, freshman Steven Ours earned a 5-2 win at 174 pounds to put Apprentice School ahead 18-9.

Freshman Willie Crawford gave the defending NCWA National Champion Kevin Bacci a run at 184 pounds falling in a tightly-fought 4-3 decision that brought West Chester to 18-12, but the Builders earned decisions by Stuart Roes at 197 and Kevin Gray at 235 to ice the dual match win.

CENTRAL FLORIDA 37, APPRENTICE SCHOOL 15

The run for the Builders ended in the semifinals as they fell to the second-seeded Knights 37-15.  After falling behind 12-0 following the 141 pound match, the Builders earned a decision at 149 by BJ Compton who scored a takedown at the final horn for a 9-8 win over TJ Gillin.

Kyle Spruill followed that at 157 pounds and won by fall in 1:45 to cut the UCF lead to 12-9.  The Knights got wins by fall at 165 and decision at 174 to go back ahead 21-9 before Willie Crawford gave the Builders one last shot with a win by fall in 73 seconds at 184 pounds for a 21-15 deficit.

UCF put away any shot with a major decision, injury default and fall in the last three matches to earn the 37-15 win.

GRAND VALLEY STATE 34, APPRENTICE SCHOOL 15

The Builders opened up a quick 9-3 lead taking decisions at 133 pounds (Chevres), 141 pounds (Wesby) and 149 pounds (Kyle Spruill).  Anderson then recorded a first period fall to put the Builders up 15-3 and break the school single-season record.  From there, Grand Valley won the last six bouts to take the 34-15 win.
